Rafael Márquez Álvarez (born 13 February, 1979) is a famous Mexican footballer who plays for both Mexican club the Mexico national team and Atlas as captain. He can play as a sweeper, defensive midfielder, central defender. He is known as the best defender in Mexico and one of the best Mexican players.


Márquez start his career in 1996 with Atlas, playing in more than 70 games with the club before contacting to France with Monaco in 1999, and won the Ligue 1 title. Márquez was transferred to Barcelona in 2003, and become the first ever Mexican to play for the club in seven years. He had played in more than 200 games and had won numerous championships. He is the first Mexican player to win the “UEFA” Champion League(2006) when Barcelona defeated Arsenal in the final. Márquez joined the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer in 2010. He moved back to Mexico in 2012, to play for Club León. After captaining the team for two back-to-back league titles in 2014 and 2013, he was transferred to Hellas Verona of the Italian Serie A. Márquez became the first ever player to captain his national team in 2014 for four consecutive editions of the FIFA World Cup, captaining the National team in the 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014 edition of the tournament.
